Don Marquis defined procrastination as the art of keeping up with yesterday. Unfortunately, this attitudinal enemy of change looks like an opportunity to be stress free but it’s the beginning of someone’s failure in life. Yes! If you don’t do it now or today, you have eventually missed your chances and unusual opportunities to soar and to be successful in any ramifications of life irrespectively. Many don’t know that procrastination is like a grave, it swallows great potentials, ideas, platforms, success chances and advantages in a man’s lifetime. It’s an enemy that can’t operate without your permission. Hear what John added, “procrastination is the grave in which opportunity is buried.” Many individuals are fond of the word ” I’ll do it tomorrow or next week or next month, or some will even say that i will go for it next year. They don’t know that trying to be stress-free is to put their potentials, performance, and results into the grave. Run away from set of procrastinators close to you, because procrastination is so contagious. And don’t get me wrong, you been in a state of preparing, training or setting is different from procrastination. I cherish the times of setting back and retreat in order to get prepared enough for your vision and dreams. Even in the place of preparation, it’s expedient you do what should be done now right away. Abraham Lincoln nailed, “you cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”
Have this and keep it, opportunity will never come to you and sit you down to tell you the exact time; minutes, hour, day, week or month that it will come to you in order to succeed, but from my experiences as a life coach, I’m very sure that it can come at any unspecified time, and when it comes it will penetrate through your past and ongoing works. Therefore, opportunities carry channels alongside, and at this junction what you’ve done and what you’re doing now will determine your successes in life. That’s why you must pay a good attention to your actions. It speaks louder and calls you in attracting great chances to achieve. Popularly known Thomas Edison mused, ” opportunity is missed by most folks because it’s dressed in overall and looks like bigger work.”
Frantically, a lethargic fellow is a procrastinator, and he or she is more or less like a person who commits suicide. Note this, there’s no how you allow laziness that you won’t procrastinate, your future inclusive. So, few things are more dangerous to a person’s character than having nothing to do and plenty of time to do it. And the truth is, any life that procrastinates faces more to do in life. You can’t dodge that, only if you want a miserable life. Let me shock you, those who live miserably face more stress and burdens in life. I agree with Edwin Markum, he nailed that “when a duty comes knocking at your gate welcome him in, for if you bid him wait, it will depart only to come ones small and bring seven other duties to your door.” And trust me with this statement, because I know that the seven other duties it will bring will be harder and overstrain you the more due to the virtue of time passed on it.
Moreover, procrastination is like a credit card; it’s a lot fun until you get the bill. It has the capacity to terminate dreams and goals if you allow it. For when a procrastinator has finally made up his mind, the opportunity to actualize his or her ambition, goal and decision has gone eventually. This has been the major cause of problems for many lives which posses this bad attitudinal enemy, that’s the reason why they can’t run after their decisions, aims or ambitions to the stage of realization.
This enemy of positive change dodges stress and later dazzles the most strenuous job easily. That was why Sir Josiah Stamp emphasized that, ” it is easy to dodge our responsibilities but we can’t dodge the consequences of dodging our responsibilities.” This is why most people who sit around waiting for their ship to come in often find it is hardship. Yes! Because procrastination wastes time and time is wealth and while destiny works with time. Note this, when there is a hill to climb, don’t think that waiting will make it smaller. Mae West emphasized, “he who hesitates is last.”
You cannot rely on long-term consequences and rewards to motivate the present self. Instead, you have to find a way to move future rewards or punishments into the present moment. You have to make the future consequences become present consequences. This is exactly what happens during the moment when we finally move beyond procrastination and take action.
For instance, let’s say you have a project or report to write. You’ve known about it for weeks and you continued to put it off day after day. You’ll surely experience a little bit of nagging pain and anxiety thinking about this project or report you have to write if you’re the serious type anyway but not enough to do anything about it. Then, suddenly, the day before the deadline, the future consequences turn into present consequences, and you write that report hours before it is due. The pain of procrastinating finally escalated and you crossed the “Action Line.”
The action line is the only answer to this procrastinating generation. However, this generation is a blessed one but the youths of this generation wear procrastination as gown, and in it they shamelessly open their mouth to complain, murmur and abuse parents, government and guidance that are once victims and now results of procrastination they made in times past. If truly youths are the leaders of tomorrow, that means today opens tomorrow. Anything or any step we take today will determine the outcome tomorrow brings. To all politicians, entrepreneurs, leaders, visionaries, speakers, teachers, professionals, parents, and individuals let’s stop procrastinating the best actions and works that fit today, in them are potentials that carry the greatness and results we want the future to birth for individuals and the nation as a whole.
The best action now is to take the best action!
There is something important to note here. As soon as you cross the Action Line, the pain begins to subside. In fact, being in the middle of procrastination is often more painful than being in the middle of doing the work. The guilt, shame, and anxiety that you feel while procrastinating are usually worse than the effort and energy you have to put in while you’re working. The problem is not doing the work, it’s starting the work.
In every time and season are great potentials and opportunities, once you procrastinate, you missed them alongside your time that’s being wasted. And the solution to it would have been if you can reverse your age. Therefore, you must be bold and determined enough to conquer the thief of time not to rub you. Say this to yourself that one of these days I’m going to get help for my procrastination problem. Those things that come to a man who waits seldom turn out to be things he waited for. And in the calendar of a procrastinator, tomorrow is the only day in the year that appeals to a lazy man. Don’t be one!
WARNING: Dates on the calendar are closer than they appear.
